Example Letter for the American Traveler Dignity Act

Please write to your representative in support of H.R. 6416.   Here's my letter, which you can use as a basis for your own:

November 20, 2010
To The Honorable Lynn A. Westmoreland,

I am writing to ask you to co-sponsor H.R. 6416, the American Traveler Dignity Act. I am disgusted and terrified of the highly personal, sexual searches going on in our nation's airports and the ionizing radiation and DNA-destroying wave outputs of so-called "Advanced Imaging Technology" machines being employed.

As an upstanding American citizen, I have the right to travel as I choose, including by means of aviation. The government does not have the right to prevent me from traveling by using threat of possible skin cancer, naked pictures, or sexual assault. As my representative in congress, I demand that you stand up for my freedom of movement, unmolested.

Please immediately sign on as a co-sponsor to H.R. 6416, the American Traveler Dignity Act, and get it on the president's desk right away, before I have to travel through the Orwellian madness that is our nation's airports.

CNN's Paula Zahn did a story about a family who were driven from their home and community because of their beliefs. Unheard-of, right? This country is built on tolerance, and we, as Americans, don't support hate crimes or religious oppression.
Paula's intro was well-presented. I bet many viewers found themselves nodding their heads in sympathy...until the shock(!!!) revelation that this is a family of Atheists.

In Part 2, Paula's show took on the guise of a public forum, and she had some people on to share their views (which, for the most part, are hateful and bigoted).
Her forum consisted of 2 Christians and a Jewish woman (source).

How interesting that they chose to do a story on Atheism, but didn't bother to invite a single Atheist to defend their viewpoint...this has not gone unnoticed.
CNN received a deluge of messages about the show. In respose to the public outcry, Paula will host Richard Dawkins on tonight's show (8pm) to represent the perspective of Atheism.

Even in simple things like driving your car down the road, a little common sense and a lightweight framework of rules works better than burdensome regulation and nonsensical safety practices.

Do you ever find yourself talking to your friends, loved ones, or relatives about libertarian principles and get the most senseless pushback on even the most basic concepts like the right to the fruits of one's labor or control over what one puts into his own body? Even though the person you're conversing with seems pretty intelligent in every other respect?

Well, this essay entitled Why Smart People Defend Bad Ideas goes a long way toward explaining it. It describes a few modes of thought and groupthink that even smart people can sometimes get stuck in, leading them to become Democrats, Republicans, or dedicate themselves to other broken ideologies. Basically, a lack of consistent self-analysis and lack of familiarity with the most fundamental aspects of logic and fallacies can cause even bright people to believe crazy things.

Check it out, and next time you're talking to someone with an intellect who persists in arguing against freedom and liberty it may help you recognize a common mode of error.

It is a live chronicle of all of the wonderful things that the tolerant, peace-loving religion of Islam has to offer. Every bombing, every brutally executed child, every beheading of a UN worker handing out food for free to starving families. Rejoice in the love and understanding that is today's Islam (and yesterday's Christianity).

A scientist named Gregory Paul asked in 2005: All other things being equal, are societies with more religion better off? By collating data from western democracies we can ask: what, if any is the correlation between levels of religiousness and social ills in these developed societies? The results were published in The Journal of Religion and Society, in September 2005. Some notable quotes include:

"In general, higher rates of belief in and worship of a creator correlate with higher rates of homicide, juvenile and adult mortality, STD infection rates, teen pregnancy, and abortion in the prosperous democracies. ... The United States is almost always the most dysfunctional of the developed democracies, sometimes spectacularly so, almost always scores poorly. "
"Higher rates of non-theism and acceptance of human evolution usually correlate with lower rates of dysfunction, and the least theistic nations are usually the least dysfunctional. .. In some cases the highly religious U.S. is an outlier in terms of societal dysfunction from less theistic but otherwise comparable secular developed democracies. In other cases, the correlations are strongly graded, sometimes outstandingly so."

"The widely held fear that a Godless citizenry must experience societal disaster is therefore refuted."

"The United States is the only prosperous democracy where religion is really popular and we're the only nation among prosperous democracies to have really high murder rates."

It is worthwhile to note that Dr. Paul's primary academic qualification is as a paleontologist, so his work in societal health should be seen as, in his own words: "not an attempt to present a definitive study that establishes cause and effect between religiosity, secularism, and societal health. Rather, the goal is to spark future research and debate on the issue."

The Intelligent Design circus in Dover, PA, has been resolved by a federal judge. We already knew how this was going to turn out...I.D. is poorly-disguised religion (and the judge agrees); it has no place in the science classroom.

"KATRINA has been a devastating storm. I feel so much for all the victims .... especially after going through some of the devastation we did last year....though not nearly as much as this is! I hope and pray that America will see this as a wake up call from God and we can get back to honoring HIM as we should. How America needs that!"

Yep. God destroyed New Orleans because it was a wicked city, not because the founding idiots decided to build it on a swamp.
(For the record, I am a recovering Southern Baptist.)

Update 1013 : The glitch has been repaired for most searches, and now 'chainsaw' actually gives me chainsaws. The link above still works, though, so it appears that 'Bibles' is simply their default error page.
Update 1230 : Glitch is totally fixed now. Link above only works because cat=416096 means Bibles. I *promise* the whole site was worse off this morning - I manually changed my searches to 'Entire Site' before querying.
